Scirus and CrossRef announce web services partnership

Elsevier has announced that Scirus, its free, science-specific search engine, has signed an agreement with CrossRef, the cross-publisher linking network with over 2200 participating publishers and societies, to become a Web Services Search Partner. The partnership allows Scirus to collect metadata from hundreds of participating publishers via CrossRef's new Web Services protocol. This combined approach improves how researchers, academics, students, and librarians search authoritative, scientific published content

BBC Radio 3 to remember Wilfred Owen

BBC Radio 3 is to celebrate the life and writings of war poet Wilfred Owen with a week of special programmes. Highlights will include choral work based on Owen's letters, and current serving soldiers reciting his poems. The special programmes will be broadcast in the week following Remembrance Day, on 12 November. Owen was killed in action on 4 November 1918, aged 25. His mother received news of his death by telegram on Armistice Day - the official end of World War I

The Library of Congress Geography and Map Division has introduced a new web site called Zoom Into Maps. The site provides a sampling of many maps from its American Memory online collection. The site is broken down into several sections including Exploration, Migration and Settlement, Military and Pictoral maps. The site is intended to increase general knowledge about maps and by doing so, provides an interesting portal into a sampling of maps from the library’s enormous collection of digitized antique maps

eScholarship Editions

The eScholarship Editions project is managed by the eScholarship program at the California Digital Library. As one of the University of California libraries, the CDL supports the assembly and creative use of the world's scholarship and knowledge for the UC libraries and the communities they serve. The eScholarship program facilitates innovation and experimentation in the production and dissemination of scholarly works. More than 1,400 electronic editions of academic books have been published online at the eScholarship Editions web site. All eScholarship Editions are available for free to UC faculty, staff, and students. Additionally, more than 25 percent of the books are available for free to the public

The complete work of Charles Darwin online

This site currently contains more than 50,000 searchable text pages and 40,000 images of both publications and handwritten manuscripts. There is also the most comprehensive Darwin bibliography ever published and the largest manuscript catalogue ever assembled. More than 150 ancillary texts are also included, ranging from secondary reference works to contemporary reviews, obituaries, published descriptions of Darwin's Beagle specimens and important related works for understanding Darwin's context. There is much still to come. The site currently contains about 50% of the materials that will be provided by 2009. New material is added almost daily. Forthcoming materials include more editions and translations, images of the majority of the Darwin Archive at Cambridge University Library, more editorial introductions and notes and transcriptions of Darwin manuscripts, and technical facilities for printing and larger images. Assistance with scanning, proof reading or transcribing is warmly welcomed

Reuters has announced that it has agreed to sell its 50 percent stake in news archive service Factiva to joint venture partner Dow Jones & Co. Inc. for $160 million. Reuters said it would continue to supply its news to Factiva as a paid supplier and would agree new content and service deals

Xrefer partners with The Alberta Library

Xrefer has announced that it has signed an agreement with the Lois Hole Campus Alberta Digital Library consortium to make Xreferplus available to its academic consortia members for the next three years. Diversity Counts

The American Library Association has released Diversity Counts, a comprehensive study of gender, race and age in the library profession. Using 1990 and 2000 Census data (the most current available), the study found that the nearly 110,000 credentialed librarians were predominantly ages 45-54, female and white. The number of racial and ethnic minorities receiving accredited library master's degrees grew 4 percent, up to about 13 percent in 2000 from 9 percent in 1990

The heritage organisations involved in the "History Matters - pass it on" campaign are asking every UK resident to take part in a mass blog event, which will record how we lived on one single day: Tuesday, 17th October 2006. The British Museum and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) have partnered with eBay.co.uk to ensure that antiquities found in the UK are being sold legally on its site. In order to prevent illegal sales of treasure, the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS, which is managed by the British Museum on behalf of the MLA) has set up a team to monitor antiquities sold on eBay.co.uk and to ensure that sellers have the right to trade them. Where the listing is illegal, PAS will report it to the Art and Antiques Unit of the Metropolitan Police and eBay.co.uk, which has committed to end illegal listings. The commitment is the latest development in eBay's on-going work with national law enforcement agencies

Amazon.com's A9 search engine drops key features

Amazon.com Inc.'s A9 search engine has dropped some of its most widely touted features, including the ability to remember everything a user has ever searched for and a service that showed detailed, street-level images of major cities. The Internet retailer removed the functions, along with several others, late Friday. Amazon.com spokesman Drew Herdener said the changes are because the company is "shifting its priorities to areas where it can provide the greatest benefit for customers."

Germans to buy Hansard printers

Document services firm Williams Lea, owned by German logistics giant Deutsche Post, is poised to buy The Stationery Office for around 130m pounds. It is understood the company's bid for The Stationery Office - which prints Hansard and The Highway Code - beat that of several other bidders. Williams Lea is now the sole bidder in talks with The Stationery Office and Apax, its private equity owners. Bar any hiccups, a deal could be announced within a couple of weeks - Telegraph
