New archive sources for the study of tuberculosis - Wellcome Library (UK)

New archive sources for the study of tuberculosis - Wellcome Library"Two new sources for the study of tuberculosis are now available in the Wellcome Library's Archives and Manuscripts department. The Library has recently acquired the records of the British Thoracic Society: they have now been catalogued and made available for research (SA/BRT). The Society was founded in 1982 as an amalgamation of the British Thoracic Association and the Thoracic Society but it can trace its family tree back to 1910. The Society’s archive thus contains records of predecessor organisations dating back to the 1920s including the Society of Superintendents of Tuberculosis Institutions (f.1920); The Tuberculosis Association (f.1928 and later known as the British Tuberculosis Association, the British Thoracic and Tuberculosis Association and the British Thoracic Association); the Joint Tuberculosis Council (f.1924) and the Thoracic Society (f.1944)"

Child's Play? Children's Book Illustration of 19th-Century Britain

Child's Play? Children's Book Illustration of 19th-Century Britain"Child's Play? Children's Book Illustration of 19th-Century Britain - April 3-July 26, 2010 - Huntington Art Gallery, USA - In the 19th century - with the work of Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Lewis Carroll, and others - children's fairy tales and nursery rhymes began to be widely published, documenting what was originally a rich oral tradition across western cultures. In Britain, such publications were enlivened by the work of some of the most talented artists and illustrators of the period, including Walter Crane (1845–1915), Arthur Rackham (1867–1939), and Kate Greenaway (1846–1901). Drawing on the collections of The Huntington’s art and literary collections, "Child’s Play?" includes a selection of rare drawings as well as the books themselves. Although beguiling, some of the stories and their illustrations represent the often complicated layering of the joys and fears related to childhood and child rearing"

Russia publishes Katyn massacre archives

Russia publishes Katyn massacre archivesFrom The BBC - "Russia has published previously secret documents on the 1940 Katyn massacre, in which some 22,000 Polish officers were killed by Soviet forces. The state archive said the "Packet No. 1" documents had until now only been available to specialist researchers. The Soviet Union denied its role in the massacre for decades. Relations between Russia and Poland have warmed since the Polish president and others were killed in a plane crash on their way to a Katyn commemoration. The documents that the state archive published were declassified in the 1990s though only specialist researchers had access to them, reports said. They were published online on the orders of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Poland has repeatedly demanded that Russia open all its files on Katyn. Earlier this month, the Russian and Polish prime ministers marked the massacre together for the first time. Days later, Polish President Lech Kaczynski and more than 90 others were killed when their plane crashed as it was trying to land in western Russia ahead of a separate event to mark the killings. The April 1940 killings were carried out by the NKVD Soviet secret police on the orders of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. They shot members of the Polish elite - officers, politicians and artists - in the back of the head and dumped their bodies in mass graves"

Alexandra Ackland-Snow, Christabel Cane, Clio Ragna-Takas, Eleanor Plews and Savannah Grieve, left, were joined by tutor Jennifer Rudnay, who performed Shakespeare sonnets at the event on Friday. Ms Rudnay, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, said: "The girls have been taught difficult theatrical techniques and are developing confidence through working in a group that will benefit them in whatever profession they decide to pursue." Kate Robinson, Oxfordshire County Council's children's librarian, said: "The girls' performance might be the first taste of Shakespeare for some children. Hopefully they will see how easily accessible his work is to people of all ages."

Five more House of Lords journals (British History Online)

"Five more volumes of the Journal of the House of Lords have been added to British History Online. These cover the years 1776 to 1793, and thus a time of revolutions in France and North America. Several volumes also detail the protracted trial in the Lords of Warren Hastings, former governor-general of Bengal. Edmund Burke was one of the prosecutors and described Hastings as "the captain-general of iniquity"; nevertheless Hastings was eventually acquitted. In volume 38 there is some interesting detail of the state of George III's health: for example on 4 December 1788 the house heard a report of the Privy Council's examination of the king's doctors"

Library plan for disused town hall in Aberystwyth (Wales)

Library plan for disused town hall in Aberystwyth (Wales)"A disused town hall could be turned into a library under plans by a local authority. The building in Aberystwyth is owned by Ceredigion council, but it became redundant when the authority opened a new office seven months ago. Officials have held talks with several organisations about funding the development, including the Welsh Assembly Government. Each issue appears just as it did at its original time of publication, complete with period advertisements. And today we're excited to announce you can browse the full archive right here on PopSci.com. As you will soon see, it's an amazing resource. Aside from bringing back memories for longtime readers, as a whole the archive beautifully encapsulates over a century of PopSci's fascination with the future, and science and technology's incredible potential to improve our lives. Tracing our dreams and visions of the future back through time, you'll see that not a lot has changed. Saint Botolph’s Review: 'an overture to the night and the party' where Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath first met

Saint Botolph’s Review: 'an overture to the night and the party' where Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath first met"The British Library has acquired an annotated edition of Saint Botolph's Review from the widow of the former Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes, one of its creators, thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the British Library. It is one of only three copies of the review held in public institutions in the UK and the only one that contains handwritten annotations. Alongside the acquisition of Saint Botolph's Review, the British Library publishes a new audio CD of Sylvia Plath speaking as poet, interviewee and critic. The Spoken Word: Sylvia Plath features previously unpublished material including all her surviving BBC broadcasts. It includes Plath reading some of her most popular poems and a rare recording of Plath and Hughes talking about their creative work, their relationship and what it's like being married to your muse. The first edition of the Saint Botolph's Review was created by Hughes with his Cambridge friends and contemporaries, Lucas Myers, Daniel Huws, David Ross and Daniel Weissbort in February 1956. The magazine featured poetry and prose written by its contributors and included the first poems Hughes published under his own name (he had previously had poetry published under the pseudonyms, Daniel Hearing and Peter Crew). The magazine was named after the rectory in Cambridge where Myers lived"

Promoting good handling - Preservation Advisory Centre Training Day (UK)

"Ensuring the safe use of collections by staff and readers is both good practice and a cost-effective method of preventing damage. Risk assessments regularly find that use of collections presents a high risk of damage, yet it is a risk that is easily mitigated. This training day is aimed at library and archive staff with responsibility for writing, implementing or promoting handling and use policies. The day communicates the role of good handling practices in the preservation of library and archive collections, outlines methods of promoting good handling practices within organisations and to users, and provides information that supports library and archive staff with the implementation of handling policies. It is led by Jane Pimlott and Sarah Hamlyn of the British Library" - 17 May 2010 - British Library Centre for Conservation, London, UK

Cpedia - the automated encyclopedia from Cuil

"Traditionally, search engines have returned a list of references in response to a query - ten blue links. Cpedia changes this. A natural way for people to receive information is a report - a summary of the topic. Current search results are more analogous to receiving a bibliography than a sourced report. For each query, Cpedia algorithmically summarizes and clusters the ideas on the web and uses this to generate a report. We do the heavy lifting of removing all the repetition, so that unique and novel content surfaces. Just as Wikipedia uses the effort of a large number of people to edit a topic, we combine all the documents written about an idea on the web to generate one article"

Secret Songs of Birds: The Hidden Beauty of Birdsong Revealed (British Library)"The British Library has launched a new CD that puts birdsong under the acoustic microscope, revealing the hidden detail of some of the natural world's most impressive songs. Many songbirds, such as the Skylark, Icterine Warbler and Grey Fantail produce songs that astound us with their complexity and speed of delivery. Though these songs never fail to impress, it is almost impossible for the human ear to distinguish the wealth of hidden notes and surprising melodies that make up these remarkable compositions. Secret Songs of Birds: The Hidden Beauty of Birdsong Revealed features 24 original recordings played alongside digitally mastered versions where the natural speed has been slowed down to reveal the subtle intricacy of each song in its full splendour.
